Regarding Mothers and Daughters

More From the Family Gathering Album: Mothers and Daughters

Mom and Me

So many possibilities for recreation on a big ranch in Wyoming with a beautiful, perfectly appointed lodge.   So many possibilities, in fact, that with two dozen plus people assembled and expectations running wild, it might be impossible to settle on an activity that everyone could agree on.   As unpopular as the notion generally is, my mom insisted on family pictures (she is a gentle soul, also quietly gritty).  Amazingly, our morning photo session ended up being one of the most fun and memorable moments.  My personal favorite.  And it included (loosely) everyone.  Though not in this post, of course.  This one is supposed to be about mothers and daughters.  I can focus.

Photo shoot:  Logistics were not in our favor…everyone was supposed to wear either some shade of blue, or white.   My niece’s husband kept insisting that his charcoal black could be interpreted as blue…and I entirely forgot to pack for the color scheme (even though Mom consulted me on the matter a whole month previous).  Thankfully, Leah had tucked in several extras (she likes lots of options…which makes shopping with her epically adventuresome) and was willing to share, so my daughters and I borrowed blue and fit in.   My sister Nola borrowed from Mara Lee.  Nora wore the only blue shirt she’d packed…a robin’s egg blue, worn and thoroughly smudged the day before… backwards.

Back to logistics:  We had to be taking pictures by nine (we’d decided morning light would be best).   And some of us like sleeping in. And yet, once we assembled—somewhere around ten thirty (did we ever really assemble? I think we did), there was banter and joking and other outrageousness, and we were together. So it was fun. Sometimes awkward because who knows what do do in front a camera?  but fun.  Which of course is important, both to the female and to the male race.  Mom (and to varying degrees, her daughters) may have been most invested in the details of the family pictures, and in the final outcome, but even the guys…even my niece’s husband…even my dad… had a good time.

I’ll show them off another day.  Today is for the ladies.

I love this little collection of photos.  Something sweet about mothers and daughters…  Featured in these photos: my mom with each of her daughters, ‘cept one (Julia Denise is missing…we missed you Julia darling).

So glad I happened upon this post. I love the pictures and the memories….and by the way I would love some hard copies….for Christmas or my birthday????Anyone. And some of the others. We have so many delightful memories….better than any Swiss porridge, berry crepes or frozen fruit salad. Love you all so much.

I fell for her when we first met.

These pictures are priceless and your words provide a lovely snapshot memory as well.
I feel like I’m savoring the left overs of a succulent meal. Thanks for reheating them!

You are all so beautiful… I never realized how much Mara Lee looks like Aunt Nancy. All of you have some of your mother’s looks. I laughed out loud at the last few with Leah and Aunt Nancy. Such fun, sweet memories captured forever. Love it!

Thanks Sara! Yes, in these pictures you can see Mom in all of us.
