My Child is Her Own Person, And Always Has Been (see cute baby photo).
It is tempting, as I publicly document my life and loves, to make it look neat and pretty, and edit out the toast crumbs and forehead lines. Which isn’t such a bad thing, really…? I’ve thumbed through “Artful Blogging”, transported and moved by its luminous eye candy. It is an ideal I’m reaching for. (Or maybe, I’m just a kid saying “I want some! Me too me too!”). Recently, I made a sweet outfit for my youngest, oh-so cleverly refashioning it out of one of my abandoned summer dresses and a sweater I’d found thrift shopping. It was a labor of love, yes, but I’ll admit also that I was possibly a little greedy… I figured I’d have bragging rights. I couldn’t wait to show off beautiful pictures of my child in my very own creation.
But (thankfully) my child is her own person, and has her own agendas.
While she is only as articulate as her eight years’ experience allows, she manages to communicate her autonomy very well. With gusto sometimes. She likes the clothes I made for her, and she loves me, but she had her own ideas about a photo shoot. It did not go picture perfectly. There was pouting, and face hiding, and downcast glances…. These pictures were taken spontaneously by her older sister after I’d abandoned the camera and picked up Nora, not wanting to provoke my child into a full-on tantrum. Snuggling always, always pulls her out of a funk…especially if the snuggling is accompanied by tickling. Maurya’s angle is almost too close (camera lens wasn’t ideal either)… but….not. I love these pics…of all that we’ve taken of my child recently, they are hands down my favorites, and ironically, half the time you can’t even see her face. Also ironically, just an hour or two later, Nora was very happy to pose for me. Go figure.
PS: I’m posting the promised thrift-refashion apron notes on Saturday; I’ll make it a Saturday Special and post pictures of Nora’s thrifted refashion and the notes for that as well.
