My offering this fine almost Spring Day: Another in a slowly trickling series of healthy recipes. This one is a smoothie starring Pears.
But first. Allow me to lapse into a tribute. To Pears. Because I’m pretty passionate about them. Here I go, since there is no one here to stop me (ah, the luxuries of a blog):
Oh, pear. How do I love thee? Let’s not count the ways, darling, because as much as I love thee, I’m right brained and I don’t like counting. Plus, I’m a little cavalier about lists (though listing–nautically speaking– comes natural enough). No, I’ll just eat you, and lick the juice off my fingers (and possibly elbows), and say…MMMM. Mmm mmm mmm. I love thee, pear…like, A Lot.
I love thee for thy own sweet sake. But I don’t mind that you’re good for me, too (to see pear’s wholesome virtues, visit PopSugar & Mother Earth Living). And I’m grateful that you’re so agreeably hypoallergenic, unlike some other sweets I sometimes crave.
Speaking of Cravings, I’m Always Up for Another Healthy Recipe.
And by late spring/early winter, healthy recipes, particularly fruity/vegetable-y ones, aren’t just nice, they are necessary to me. A staple. Why? Because. I’ll tell you why.
I’ll even use a list:
1) I’m coming out of a sort of winter-forced hibernation. I’m looking for further proof that there’s sunshine in my universe.
B) Having just come out of a winter-forced hibernation, with bits of brownie, stollen, and other such deliciousness littering my gastronomical boudoir, I figure it is high time for spring cleaning. Time for some spick and spanny sparkly freshness.
Last: Crisp, fresh veggies and sweet, hypoallergenic fruit are both further proof of sunshine, and the food equivalents of Cinderella with suds in her bucket… a cleaning Maiden Fair: bubbles and yodeling complete. Ok maybe not yodeling but this is my blog and I can write what I want.

(Jewel, y’all…Cinderella enough for me!)
My recipe features the Lovely Pear and her friends Cucumber, Kiwi, Lemon, and Honeydew. I know honeydew isn’t in season at the same time pears are… but I freeze my extra fruit when it is in season to use later, when it isn’t. I have watermelon, bananas, lots and lots of peaches, and a cornucopia of my mom’s fresh berries stashed in my freezer. Last fall, my garden gifted me such sweet, profuse honeydew…I had to freeze some of for eventual savoring. Also, I like to use fresh pears to decorate with, and we don’t always get them all eaten by the time they’re ripe, so I freeze the extras for smoothies and sauces.
Comice pears are my favorite of the commercially available pears…very smooth, extra sweet, with a lovely tang. But Seckel pears (sugar pears) are my veriest favorite-est of all. Soooo sweet. Soooo fragrant (we’re talking fruit perfume here), and juicy, and smooth. Almost impossible to find in stores. A Seckel tree is definitely worth planting in your garden (I have).
If you’ve made many smoothies, you could probably leave right now and whip one up…just knowing the ingredients is enough for some folks. But I promised a recipe, and so a recipe I will deliver. Happy, happy spring cleaning, friends! Enjoy it… with a Smile and a Song.
Healthy Recipes: Pear, Cucumber, Kiwi Smoothie
Sweet and Tangy, a Fruit Smoothie with a Veggie twist: Pear, Cucumber, Kiwi, and Melon. Clean, fresh, sparkly: a healthy recipe that not only feels great, it tastes lovely.
Ingredients
NoteI used frozen pear slices and frozen honeydew cubes in this recipe (freezing is a great way to save surplus fruit). You could use fresh pears and melon in this recipe; just substitute ice cubes for the water to get that wonderful slushy freezy texture we all love in a smoothie. If you're feeling experimental, you could try about a teaspoon of minced fresh ginger in this recipe... Directions

This sounds delicious! I love juicing, and I’ll have to remember this recipe. Thanks!
Thank you Jeannie.
